Full-Time Department of Public Works (DPW) Worker
The Village of Caledonia is seeking a motivated, dependable, and hardworking individual to join our Department of Public Works (DPW) team. This full-time position plays a vital role in maintaining the Village’s streets, public facilities, utilities, and infrastructure. The successful candidate will enjoy a variety of hands-on work, operate equipment, and help keep our community safe, clean, and attractive throughout the year.
Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Public Works Foreman/Village Manager, the DPW Worker performs a wide range of skilled and semi-skilled tasks involving the operation of trucks, tools, and machinery used in the maintenance, repair, and improvement of Village infrastructure. The position plays a vital role in maintaining public services and responding to community needs throughout the year. Work is primarily performed outdoors and may involve exposure to adverse weather conditions, including rain, storms, snow, ice, and extreme temperatures.
The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Summer work hours are Monday through Thursday 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Work hours may vary to accommodate scheduled Village events, seasonal operations, and emergency responses as needed. Employees must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs as necessary to ensure community safety.

Core Duties & Responsibilities
- Road & Infrastructure: Patch potholes, install and repair street signs/lights.
- Seasonal Maintenance: Plow snow, salt roads, shovel sidewalks, and clear debris. Collect curbside lawn bags and brush, fall leaf clean up.
- Groundskeeping: Mow grass, trim trees/hedges, plant flowers, and maintain various greenspace. Perform routine maintenance on Village buildings and facilities. Assist with facility repairs and improvement projects.
- Utilities: Clean storm drains, repair catch basins, respond to MissDig requests.
- Equipment Operation: Safely operate hand tools, power tools, dump trucks, pickup trucks, utility vehicles, chippers, mowers, and heavy machinery (e.g., tractors, loaders).
- Safety & Compliance: Set up traffic control and barriers, follow all Village and OSHA requirements, attend required safety and job-related training, and perform routine maintenance on equipment. Ability to read and understand safety manuals, work orders, and instructions.
- Soft Skills: Strong customer service skills, professional demeanor, sound judgment, and the ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers and the public while working independently or as part of a team.
Qualifications & Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid State Driver’s License is required.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and drug screening.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (50+ lbs) and occasionally move heavier material with assistance.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, crouch and work on uneven terrain for extended periods.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and ice.

Lane Closures
Lane closures are expected to start Monday and Tuesday, M-37 (Broadmoor Avenue) traffic will be switched into the next stage of construction. Southbound M-37 lane closures will be in place from Kraft Avenue to 76th Street, and northbound lane closures will start near Main Street and continue to 92nd Street. Traffic shifts with one lane open in each direction will be in place on M-37 between 92nd and 76th streets. This stage will be in place through mid-November. The work is weather dependent.

PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Village Council of the Village of Caledonia (the “Village”) will hold a special meeting of the Village Council on May 29, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., at the Caledonia Village Hall, located at 250 S. Maple Street SE within the Village, regarding the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year, and a public hearing will be held during the special meeting to hear and consider comments regarding the proposed Village budget for the July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027 fiscal year and the property tax millage rate proposed to be levied in support of the proposed budget. The Village Council may make decisions with respect to the budget for the 2026-2027 fiscal year and the property tax millage rate to be levied in support of the budget.
All interested persons may attend the special meeting. Proposed minutes of the special meeting of the Village Council will be available for public inspection not more than eight business days after the special meeting. Approved minutes of the Village Council meeting will be available for public inspection at the Village Hall not later than five business days after the meeting at which the minutes are approved by the Village Council.

PUBLIC HEARING ON BUDGET FOR 2026-2027 FISCAL YEAR
PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on May 29, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., the Village Council of the Village of Caledonia will hold a public hearing at the Caledonia Village Office, 250 S. Maple Street, Caledonia, Michigan, to hear and consider comments regarding the proposed Village budget for the July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027 fiscal year. A copy of the budget is available for public inspection at the Caledonia Village Office.
The property tax millage rate proposed to be levied to support the proposed budget will be a subject of this hearing.
This notice is given pursuant to Act 43 of the Public Acts of Michigan of 1963 (Second Extra Session), as amended.
